Pugin's Summer Crafts Week 1: Lace and Flax Cordage

Join us for a summer programme filled with unique craft activities inspired by AWN Pugin!
Our inspiration comes straight from the Cathedral itself. As part of the Restoring Pugin Project, experts are currently uncovering gorgeous, hidden wall designs originally painted by the Cathedral's Architect, Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin. Just as Pugin looked to nature to inspire his intricate decor, we will use real plants and flowers to design detailed patterns on special photographic paper and fabric.
We will host two workshops a day, and after each workshop you will receive two stamps on your Certificate of Participation. Attend all five sessions over the summer to complete the whole set!
Nottingham is world famous for lacemaking, but what is less well known is that Nottingham lace is machine made. Before the invention of these amazing machines, lace was made by hand by very skilled ladies in their own homes. In this workshop, we will be making a beginners' piece of lace and showing you how more complex pieces were made.
Flax is an ancient fibre plant with a long history of being a revered and useful plant for fabric, food and oil. From being used in burial practices in ancient Egypt to altar cloths in modern Christianity, Flax is most commonly known as the plant that produces fine linen fabric. However, the craft of hand plying cordage predates this by thousands of years!
- Learn a craft that has been a major industry in local history AND a historical craft that has been used since the ancient times
- Materials: All supplies are provided, and you will take home whatever you create!
- Attending this session will earn you a stamp one your Certificate of Participation
- Age: Suitable for ages 7+ (all children must be supervised by an adult).
